Introduction

The paper is an examination of an exercise program. The program will be a plan that facilitates individuals who would like to make a change from an inactive to an active lifestyle. The gist of the program will be to introduce participants into the world of exercise by promoting their health and independence, protecting them against any potential disability and by making exercise part of their lifestyle.

Section 1: Literature review

The exercise program is founded upon the health belief model (HBM). This model is centered on the premise that psychology can be used to understand and elaborate facts about people’s health behaviors. In other words, the model places a lot of emphasis on the beliefs and attitudes of the individual. The model was developed as far back as the mid nineteen fifties. At that time, the psychologist studying this model was looking for ways in which he could get people to go for a TB screening program for free since most of them had not responded to the program very positively. Through the work of this psychologist, the health model can now be applied to a wide range of health related preventive measures such as exercise programs. (DeLee and Drez, 2003)
The third assumption in the health belief model is that people can only take part in a health initiative when they have confidence in themselves about taking that action. In this case, participants will take part in the program if they believe that they have the ability to complete the exercise program i.e. they need to believe that the exercise program can be done and that it can be done successfully.
It should be noted that most of the assumptions within the health belief model are related to a number of perceived notions as listed below:
* Perceived barriers
* Perceived benefits
* Perceived severity
* Perceived susceptibility
The latter four concepts can be summarized under the premise that people will only take action when they are ready to act. Consequently, all the latter mentioned issues (bulleted list) are related to how ready people are to act.

It should be noted that in this case, a number of actions will need to be taken in order to change people’s perceptions about exercises as a preventative measure for health related complications. These can be examined under the six concepts of the health belief model. In terms of perceived susceptibility; it will be necessary to make sure that the participants understand the possible repercussions of passive related diseases. Consequently, those who take part in the program will only be the ones who believe that they are at risk of getting health complications from not doing any form of exercise. Besides this, it will also be necessary to consider the perceived severity of these cardio-related diseases.(Kraemer & Zatsiorsky, 2006)
It is also essential to ensure that participants are fully aware of the perceived benefits of the exercise program. They need to believe that the program can actually protect them against a number of health related complications. They need to believe in this recommendation as a curative measure. This aspect can be dealt with by showing participants examples of people who have taken up the health initiative and have experienced the results. All these barriers can be dealt with by assuring participants about their performance in relation to their counterparts. Additionally, participants will also be informed about the short time span that the exercise program will last so as to eliminate their fear of time wastage. Those who may fear the difficulty of the program will be sensitized about the simplicity of the program. They will be told beforehand about all the details in a step by step manner.
Flexibility exercises were chosen as part of the program because when the muscles are flexible, then the body can move around well. This is particularly important owing to the fact that body movements can only occur when there are substantial decreases in muscle tensions.
Other reasons of including flexibility exercises in the program include the fact that they reduce the risks of getting injuries. Considerable surveys conducted among athletes (especially male athletes), have indicated that the more flexible an athlete is, the less susceptible they will be to injuries. In close relation to this argument is the fact that flexibility exercises’ reduce soreness in the muscles. This is especially prevalent among beginners who may have problems trying to adjust their bodies to the new exercise routine. Flexibility exercises are also crucial in ascertaining that certain body parts are in good condition.The reason for this choice is that it is the most effective method of improving flexibility among participants. Alternatively, one can opt to contract their calf muscles while at the same time tightening one’s shins and then stretching the calf muscles. Aerobic conditioning will also form part of the exercise program due to number of health related benefits. First of all, aerobic conditioning facilitates efficient pumping of blood by the heart. The exercise program will incorporate aerobic conditioning through a number of methods in order to deal with the various reasons for not doing exercises in the first place. Also, some people may get bored by restricting themselves to the indoors. Consequently, aerobic conditioning will entail a mixture of things. However, those who cannot will be required to cycle stationary bicycles within the training facility. This will go a long way in boosting their strength. Thereafter, some strength exercises will be conducted. Here participants will repeat weight exercises with thirty repetitions each. Thereafter, they will be expected to lift some light weights, those who seem to be progressing well will increase their efforts. The session will end by flexibility exercises with special emphasis on the affected muscles. (Kraemer, 2003)

Outcomes

The Outcomes of the program were measured through a series of avenues. The first and most prevalent one was through weight loss. Participants were expected to set weight targets depending on their original weight at the onset of the program. This was usually measured after a period one week. Participants who had not achieved their targets were assisted by paying extra attention to their training sessions and also by monitoring their dietary needs. In order to measure the outcome of the strength training, participants were given sets of weights which they were supposed to manage after a certain number of weeks. Consequently, those who could carry the weights would be regarded as successful candidates. Also, a number of physiological aspects were monitored; for instance, participants’ heart rates were measured in order to record effects of the aerobic conditioning. Lastly, progress was ascertained by comparing participants’ weight, sets of strength training and heart rates in each week long session with what they have recorded in previous sessions.

Evaluation

The effectiveness of the program was ascertained by ensuring that participants could do a series of exercises. This was to cater for the differing needs and also to eliminate boredom. Additionally, strength training activities were done in moderation. This was quite appropriate because it ensured that the participants were not overburdened with over intensive programs. The type of flexibility exercises chosen were also appropriate because they corresponded to the nature of training done at any one time. (Stamford, 1999)
Some of the problems that could arise are; failure of the respondents to meet their exercise program. This can be as a result of a negative attitude, a lack of confidence in themselves or too much pressure. The problem can be avoided by setting more favorable goals of individuals, boosting the morale of the participants and by meeting their specific pressure goals. Another problem that could crop up is muscle injury. This can be avoided by doing strength training at a moderate pace.
Some of the things that can be changed in the future include the institution of dietary mechanisms in the exercise program in order to complement efforts made by individuals with those other healthy lifestyles.

Conclusion

The exercise program was a combination of three basic elements in aerobics i.e.; flexibility exercises, aerobic conditioning and strength training. The latter aspect of the program focused on developing strengths in the muscles and bones and is essential for daily work. Flexibility exercises focused on preparing the body for more intensive exercise. This was achieved by stretching; an exercise intended on preparing the body for movement. Lastly, the exercise program, also entailed aerobic conditioning. The main essence of aerobic conditioning is to heighten the heart rate for a considerable period of time. This is essential in protecting the body organs such as the lungs and also assists in managing weight by burning fat. (Knuttgen, 2003)
